ABSTRACT – Life as story that evolves. Thoughts on two recent publications. The author

reflects on the theme of life and its origin. He deals with two books. The first one is by an

atheist scientist, Edoardo Boncinelli; the second one by Fiorenzo Facchini, an anthropologist,

Catholic priest. Boncinelli argues that the explanation of the origin of life is contained

in Darwinism. Facchini instead shows that it can be interpreted in a theological and

scientific sense and uses the categories of Thomism: First Cause, Second Causes, Ultimate

End. Facchini respects Boncinelli, and believes that science can help theology, giving a

solid and historical foundation to her statements. The “ontological leap” made by man,

distinguishes him from every other animal species and configures him as a creature by

himself. The author remembers that, according to Scripture, there is still a tree in the

Garden of Eden, the tree of life, which could be achieved without sin by an evolved man

as a creature of God.

KEY WORDS – Life, Darwinism, Thomism, Theology, Sciences.
