Immagine e parola s’illuminano a vicenda. Nelle chiese antiche viene sviluppato un programma iconografico preciso, unitario e organico, che caratterizza lo spazio in modo che l’assemblea si senta più facilmente coinvolta nel mistero che viene celebrato. L’intento di questi programmi era soprattutto di tipo mistagogico; pertanto l’iconografia era centrata sulla storia della salvezza, ma contesti temporali, ambientali e sociali, oltre che religiosi, hanno determinato, lungo i secoli, diversi tipi di intervento iconografico per giungere alle chiese nuove spesso prive di qualsiasi elemento iconografico o con proposte iconografiche «senza immagini», che s’inseriscono nell’attuale dibattito in merito al figurativo e non figurativo nell’arte per la liturgia.
Iconographic programs. The lesson of history
Image and Word illuminate each other. In ancient churches is developed a precise, iconographic program, organic unit, which characterizes the space so that the Assembly feels more easily involved in the mystery that is celebrated. The intent of these programs was primarily a mystagogic one; therefore the iconography was centred on the history of salvation, but temporal, environmental and social as well as religious contexts, have produced, over the centuries, different kinds of iconographic intervention, until we arrive to the new churches that are often lacking in any iconographic element or with iconographic proposals «without pictures», so becoming part of the current debate about the figurative and non-figurative art for liturgy.
